Stephen Ministry

Pastors will always be on the front lines of care, especially during crises. But there are always more needs of ongoing personal care than pastors can effectively meet on their own.

Stephen Ministry is our congregation's one-to-one caregiving ministry. God works through Stephen Ministers to plant a seed of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of a crisis or tragedy. Copeland Church is part of an ecumenical program involving over 8,000 congregations worldwide and in more than 72 denominations. The Stephen Ministry program trains and equips lay people to do care-giving ministry and the Presbyterian Church (USA) has been a strong participant in this program. Currently, we have five active Stephen Ministers and two Stephen Leaders.

There are times in all of our lives when we experience a hurting or painful situation. Quite often we weather these situations because of the presence of a Christian care-giver. This is what a Stephen Minister can be for you-a trained care-giver who can walk through the valleys of life with you.

A few of these situations where a Stephen Minister may be helpful to you, a family member, or a friend are: separated or going through a divorce, shut-in, lonely, elderly, grieving, in job crisis, unemployed, in a nursing home, single parents, adjusting to new circumstances, moving, retirement, empty nest, family members of the dying, ill, or disabled, etc.

The Stephen Ministry logo shows a person who is "broken" of hurting on the left side and a person who is "whole" on the right side. The cross of Christ in the center represents the healing which may take place with Christian care-giving.

Stephen Ministers:
  • CHRIST
  • CARING
  • FOR PEOPLE THROUGH PEOPLE

That's the motto of Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Minister's role is to bring God's love into the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Ministers do? They listen to you, care for you, support and encourage you, and pray with and for you. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God's healing love comes pouring through.

To inquire about having a Stephen Minister, contact one of the Stephen Leaders, Mae Todd or Cindy Saseen. All inquires and Stephen Ministry relationships are kept strictly confidential. The church telephone number is 233-8678.
